People where I live wear straw all year sometimes but I live in South Texas so Its not as cold so you can get away with it but most people wear felt during winter and switch to straw around spring time.
there are no rules written down for proper etiquette for what hat you should wear at what time of year however Cowboy rules (again not written down) dictate that unless you live in a constant warm area you should wear a felt hat when your head gets cold. most working Cowboys wear a felt hat all year around, most Ranchers will switch to a straw or palm
