Recently, I was exposed to an element of Italian culture known as the rate bella figura. Loosely translated, it means "make a good impression." A practitioner of the tariff Bella Figura maintains a gap-control in all circumstances, regardless of the situation.

In this case, the person displaying these traits was the wife of my boss. She was standing on the platform behind the cruiser that took him to our yacht, which was lying off the coast of Genoa, Italy.There was a sea running slightly, his boat, not being, swayed gently in the swell. Our boat was back up slowly so that she would be able to pass a stern platform to another. Did I mention she was wearing a sun hat with wide brim, which she held down with one hand, an elegant summer dress and a pair of high heels? His other hand rested casually on the arm of her friend, similarly dressed, which I assume would also step on board.

These hats were chosen to offer maximum protection to the face, neck, eyes, and ears. The association suggests women should follow the "more skin, more brim" rule, and increase the size of the hat's brim when their swimsuit becomes skimpier! A hat with a brim of more than five inches can offer extra protection for shoulders and necks, not to mention looking fabulous!

But it's not all about the brim. The Headwear Association also suggests looking at the hat's Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating, which indicates how much of the sun's powerful UV rays are absorbed by the hat's material. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends choosing a hat with a UPF rating of at least 30, but 50 is better!
